 Preproduction of seahorses

Seahorses reproduce in an unusual way. The male seahorse becomes pregnant instead of the female.
Most seahorse pregnancies lasts approximately approximately 2 to 3 weeks. The male seahorse has a brood pouch where he carries eggs deposited by the female.

When mating, the female seahorse deposits up to 1,500 eggs in the male's pouch. The male carries the eggs for 9 to 45 days until the seahorses emerge fully developed, but very small. The young are then released into the water, and the male often the male often mates again within hours or day during the breeding season.
